How it works:

1. IKAWA

Roast samples in the Pro100x and measure the colour score. Upload to the data MagicBeans.

2. MagicBeans

Use Target Colour Mode to generate a reference profile at your desired colour score.

3. Bühler

Roast on RM20 or RM60.

4. MagicBeans

Use the profile overlay and realtime Colour Prediction Mode to compensate for deviations in your roast.

The Few Coffee have played a significant role as our development partner, contributing data and product feedback. They have been using a demo version of MagicBeans as Roast Management Software for the past 6 months and the new Target Colour Mode for 2 months.

FAQ:

We have tested over 100 coffees from popular regions in washed, natural and anaerobic processing methods.
One of our goals over the coming months is to bring more coffees into the dataset. With your help we can add many more.
Yes, this is a new research project and has been designed to use IKAWA Pro100x and Bühler RM20 or RM60. They work together, so you will need both roasters.
The MagicBeans software will need access to a limited amount of roast logs to function. Cropster or Artisan work best.
The greater the selection of bean types in your roast logs the easier it is the create reference profiles in your roasting style.
One reason we encourage further sharing of data during the early access programme is because it will make it easier for others to roast new bean types that they haven’t roasted before, and their data will help you.
Don’t worry, all data is anonymised.
The software is free for Beta users for life. Once we end the Beta, new customers will then pay £99/m for RM20 and £199/m for RM60, per roaster.
Installation fees will be covered by Buhler for existing customers during Beta, or be included in commissioning a new roaster.
MagicBeans is a web app, so you can use it on your Mac or Windows PC, or mobile/tablet.
The link for the app will be sent to participants in the early access programme. If you want to try before you buy we will offer demos.
We will offer demonstrations in Uzwil and shortly London. If you already have a Buhler roaster we can come to you and set it up.
All colorimeters can be used but it’s important to recalibrate at eh recommended periods to ensure batch to batch consistency over time.
